The US President and Colombia's president have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing tensions in their relations following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.
"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.
Escalating Threats coupled with Accusations
Addressing the press over the weekend, the American leader threatened comparable use of force towards the South American nation, claiming the country is also "very ill" and “run by a sick man involved in producing narcotics and trafficking it to the US."
Although Colombia stands as the leading source of the narcotic, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the trade.
A Deteriorating Alliance
This nation has long been a key ally of the US in the fight against drug trafficking and enjoyed wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated significantly following Trump was elected.
Colombia’s narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions such as one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.
The President's Strong Answer
When asked if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "It sounds good to me."
Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am no illegitimate nor am I a narco," he affirmed.
"The US president speaks without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed online.
"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, whom many of the country admires and supports, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," he admonished.
From Fighter to Leader
Petro spent some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed to have ever participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and eventually served as a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city before winning president.
"I swore not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I shall resume arms again," he vowed.
Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation
Colombia's defense chief announced that the national leader's security detail had been reinforced.
Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures spanning the political spectrum have denounced the threats of an invasion against their nation.
Political and Financial Sanctions
The US cancelled his travel authorization subsequent to he urged US military personnel to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.
At the same time while America bolstered its military presence in the region and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out strikes against vessels off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
